Return of Political Girl Ok, I know I said I was done but this was sent to me through my designers group and I thought I was so well written. I hope the lady who wrote it doesn't mind my reposting. Dear American, I am deeply saddened by the disgraceful decision of my country's Prime Minister to withhold Canada's support in the U.S.-led war against Saddam Hussein. I took Prime Minister Jean Chretien at his word when he said: "The report of Blix, if he says (Hussein) is not conforming, he has not disarmed, Resolution 1441 will authorize action. Perhaps some people will want to have another vote. I'm not there, I don't vote there." --Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, Thursday Jan. 30/03 On March 17th, 2003, a mere six weeks later, he proved his word was not his bond: Chretien said, "If military action proceeds (against Saddam Hussein) without a new resolution of the Security Council, Canada will not participate." The Prime Minister's stand on the situation in Iraq is without logic. This same man endorsed Canadian military intervention in Kosovo - without a UN resolution. The Canadian military helped stop Serbian genocide, because it was the right thing to do. Dear American, Canada claims to uphold the values of basic human rights and freedoms in all countries. My Prime Minister's weak-kneed refusal to back up Canada's claims with action is unconscionable. Dear American, At this time of crisis, you stand without the support of the Prime Minister of Canada, but you do not stand without support from citizens of this country. The U.S. and Canada are more than two countries who share a border. We are friends. And friends do not abandon friends when the rubber hits the road and the time for action is upon us. Dear American, Do not look at Canada and see my Prime Minister. Look at Canada and see me, your friend, your neighbor, your sister - in the bond of our international family. I stand with you. © Terri McPherson Windsor, Ontario, Canada Sunday, March 23, 2003
Doesn't it just make you proud to be Canadian... I am not a political person.... check that, I am political, I just don't ram my thoughts or beliefs down others throats. Usually. (This is your cue to run away screaming if you don't want to hear this...or click here, here and here to see the new covers for the Harry Potter book) Today however I'm in the mood to share. (Muwwwwa ha ha ) I'm finding it difficult to be a proud Canadian these days. I'm not going to share my views on whether or not I think the war is a necessary thing or not but the fact is there IS a war going on. There are men and women over there giving there life to protect and I believe them to be heroes what ever your war/peace thoughts are. My BIG grrrrrrr is with my government. I will grant you that there isn't a lot militarily we could contribute given the pathetic state of our military (But that's a whole different rant, maybe we could send a couple of canoes and a hockey stick? :) ) and the fact that most are committed elsewhere but what bugs me is or PM's staunch "We won't get involved" thing. AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!! He says it's because most of the country doesn't support the war and yet an Ispos-Reid poll released March 14 found that 52% of Canadians believed that the US had made the case for war. I think the editorial in the "Sunday Sun" today summed it up pretty good. "......we belive many Canadians are trouble by the day Chretien so cavalierly tossed aside our historic allies, and our deeply held concerns about Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein because of UN technicalities. They're furious Canada has not, even with the token forces we've already committed to the Gulf, signed on to the "coalition of the willing." What makes me even more frustrated by this is the comments I've been getting from people from other countries assuming that our PM speaks for us all. Actually, I don't think he even speaks for most of us. Ok. I'm done. But before I get down off my soapbox here's a cartoon I found in our local paper...... ![]() |
